Selma’s Promise: The Prospects for a New Democracy
IN 1965, the Voting Rights Act ended legal, political apartheid for Negroes in America and expanded electoral opportunities for citizens whose rights to participate in a democratic society were suppressed based upon race, creed, gender and disability.
IN Selma, Alabama, blacks and whites struggled for the right to vote in the heat of a racist regime. Fueled by faith communities, artists and an unshakable reliance upon the Constitution, civic rights workers waged a battle to reconcile American democracy to its intended purposes.
YET, has the potential of Selma been fully realized? The presidential elections in 2000 and 2004 may well represent how far we must go in order to guarantee democracy for all—a more perfect union. What challenges confront us as we fight for full civic rights? What cultural or political resources might we employ to advance a full democracy. How do we assess Selma’s promise in our age?
Renew The Voting Rights Act
The Voting Rights Act must be renewed or million of voters will lose special protects at the polls. We must not lest this happen. Sign the RainbowPUSH petition to renew the Voting.

| TWO: | Organize a Voting Rights Act Teach-In with local activists in your city or town to get the word out about renewing the VRA |

| FOUR: | Get your local body of government to officially express its support of VRA renewal and notify the local press of this support. |
| FIVE: | Donate to New Democracy Coalition’s state-based and national efforts to renewal and expand the VRA. |
